The last person may have emptied the dryer without checking its filter. Before the next load, use the instructions for the machine you actually have. A clean user filter is one routine step; it does not certify the dryer or its vent system.

1. Start free with the model instructions.

With the machine stopped and cool, find the user-accessible lint filter and its cleaning instructions in the manual. Do not remove panels, move the dryer or disturb gas or electrical connections. If the filter location or cleaning method is unclear, ask the manufacturer or laundry operator before using the machine. This guide does not replace model-specific instructions.

2. Check before and after each cycle.

USFA advises cleaning the lint filter before and after each cycle and never operating the dryer without its filter. Follow the manual for removing lint, checking the user-accessible filter and putting it back correctly. Do not force a stuck part or run the machine with a missing, damaged or incorrectly fitted filter. Do not add a washing or solvent step that the manual does not call for.

3. Keep a filter check separate from service work.

The dryer vent system can have problems that an emptied screen does not resolve. USFA calls for professional installation and service. If drying takes unusually long, the machine has damage or the correct filter cannot be fitted, stop using it and arrange appropriate qualified help rather than assuming another cycle will fix it. Do not pull a heavy dryer forward, open its housing or disconnect ducts or utilities as part of this routine.

4. Make the handoff clear in shared laundry.

Follow the building or laundry operator’s instructions and report a missing filter or apparent fault to them. Do not handle another person’s belongings or repair shared equipment. At home, agree who checks the filter when a load ends and who checks before the next one starts. A reminder on your own laundry checklist is our organizing suggestion; keep paper away from hot equipment and vents.

5. Stop the routine for actual danger.

This is maintenance during ordinary conditions, not a response to a dryer fire. If there is smoke, fire or immediate danger, get out, stay out and call emergency services from a safe place. Do not reach into, move or investigate a burning machine to complete a lint check. Record unresolved maintenance needs without declaring the machine safe.

Phone-save recap

Find the model instructions. Check the user filter before and after each cycle. Refit it correctly; never run without it. A clean filter does not verify the vent system. Leave service work to qualified help and follow actual emergency protective instructions promptly.

Sources and review

USFA sources opened October 15, 2026. The pictograph lists September 15, 2021 as its review date. Model lookup, household handoff and written gap recording are our organizing suggestions. No product is selected; checking the existing user filter is the free first action.
