Emergency water planning for beginners

Start with a quantity, a safe source and a storage plan. An empty store shelf does not tell you whether your tap water is safe.

How much water should you plan for?

CDC recommends at least one US gallon per person per day for three days. Try to prepare for two weeks if possible. This is a household planning baseline for drinking and other uses, not a personalized medical fluid target. Three days is not a guarantee of sufficiency.

Baseline US gallons, before extra needs and pets
People3 days14 days
1 person3 gallons14 gallons
2 people6 gallons28 gallons
4 people12 gallons56 gallons

The calculation is people × days × 1 US gallon per person per day. Hot conditions, illness, pregnancy and other needs may require more. Plan pets separately with your veterinarian’s advice and each animal’s usual intake and care needs.

If the store has no water, check the supply

  1. Check your water utility or local health department. If tap water is confirmed safe, use it and fill suitable containers cleaned and sanitized using the linked CDC directions. Never use containers that held toxic chemicals.
  2. If there is an advisory, read its exact instructions. Boil-water, do-not-drink and do-not-use notices mean different things. Boiling cannot make water with fuel or toxic chemicals safe. A normal pitcher filter is not a universal emergency treatment.
  3. If no safe source is available, seek official help. Check your utility and local emergency management for current distribution or assistance. Confirm locations, hours and access before traveling.

Store it where you can maintain it

Unopened commercial bottled water is CDC’s most reliable emergency option. Follow its expiry date. If filling your own water, follow CDC’s container and cleaning instructions and replace it every six months. Keep water cool, away from sunlight and chemicals.

One useful task today

Write down your people count, the three-day baseline and how much usable water you already have. Subtract what you have to see the gap. For four people, 12 gallons minus 5 usable gallons leaves 7 gallons to obtain, before extra needs and pets.
